Worth more than a cow - Hope for educated women in Tanzania

Worth more than a cow!In a country where young girls are traded for cows as a part of a tribal marriage contract, educational facilities for young women are on now the rise. A great example of these educational facilities is Baobab Secondary School. The school is a campus style, girls boarding establishment that opened to the public on the 15th January 2005. Currently, Baobab Secondary School has over 700 girls enrolled and taking courses such as Mathematics, Physics, English Language, Geography, and Information Technology.

Baobab Secondary School believes that in order to compete in today’s global job market, Tanzanian women need ICT skills. However, for a Tanzanian woman, getting a higher paying career is not the only driving factor for attaining an education.  In some cases, young girls have been able to escape arranged marriages, abusive situations, and even female circumcision.

According to one of Baobab Secondary School students, IT education has enhanced her understanding in her other subjects. ‘I really feel I am among the useful people in the world’, says Maria Silvanus one of the schools top students.

With the help and support of organizations like Lloyds Pharmacy, local schools, and residents throughout the United Kingdom, we can continue to bridge the digital divide and stand against poverty. Thank you to all of our donors for giving a young woman in Africa a chance in life.
