The Repurposed Shipping Container With Three Lives
Dar Es Salaam Tanzania
Rightway School is a Nursery and Primary school established in 2005 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. It derives it’s name from the belief that education is a step in the right direction in the development of any country. The establishment of the school created more opportunities for the Dar es Salaam community to have international standard educational facilities at their doorstep thus reducing pressure on public schools. Rightway provides high quality education that meets international standards through the Tanzanian national curriculum.
The school has benefited from one of the first ‘Shipping Container Classrooms’. Before the arrival of the shipping container the school didn’t have any computers so the it was a great introduction to IT. A self-contained secure space was created from a decommissioned shipping container. Once fully equipped with all the necessary items, the school was able to timetable IT as a subject giving the students access to IT in lessons from a young age.
The school authorities recognised how many additional opportunities were available to both the school and the students and set about the building of an integral IT Lab.
This process took several years but the Lab has now been created and fitted out with additional computers. Right Way Primary School are seeing an increase in the number of students wanting to attend. The level of achievement in the school is also increasing as the students can access IT earlier in their education.
The shipping container has now been re-purposed and is on it’s 3rd life. The container is now being used for a community sewing project where, among other things, new school uniforms are made for the students. This reuse is having a hugely positive impact on the local business and providing job opportunities for the local community
